Israeli President Isaac Herzog met with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Thursday on the sidelines of the Asian security summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Kazakh presidency said.

The two discussed expanding cooperation, focusing on trade, economic and investment ties, according to Astana’s readout. Tokayev said Herzog’s April visit to Astana had given “significant impetus” to bilateral relations.

Herzog welcomed Kazakhstan’s accession to U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, calling it an important contribution to peace and stability, the readout said.

The two also discussed tensions in the Middle East, with Tokayev reaffirming Kazakhstan’s “principled position on the need to de-escalate tensions and resolve conflicts exclusively through diplomatic means.”

The reversal “sends an unfortunate signal at a time of rising antisemitism and sustained efforts to isolate Israel economically,” Evan R. Bernstein, CEO of B’nai B’rith International, told JNS.
Cooperation cannot thrive with boycotts, said the Israeli president, who met Bahraini and Chinese foreign ministers on the sidelines of a pan-Asian conference in Azerbaijan.
“People need to be aware, and institutions need to repair,” Miri Bar-Halpern told JNS. “Clinicians are engaging in activism. It’s not about therapy anymore.”
Mark Levine “pledged many times to restore New York City’s investment in Israel Bonds and had it right when he called them ‘a long-term safe and secure investment,’” an Israel Bonds spokesman told JNS.
