“Countries have interests, they don’t necessarily have friends, and the Saudis have come to the conclusion that it is in their national interests to make peace with the Israelis,” said attorney Eric Levine, a participant and board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition.
“For a long time, the Saudis haven’t liked the current Lebanese government. They are refusing to help Lebanon because they feel Hezbollah controls the political system and influences everything,” said Orna Mizrahi at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies.
Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah Al Saud said in a TV interview that Hezbollah’s role in Lebanon needs “reform and comprehensive revision.”
The men, residents of Saudi Arabia, were arrested three years ago and accused of links with a terrorist organization and its fundraising.
Othman Al-Omeir, the editor of the news website Elaph, tweeted: “I support Tahani Al-Qahtani, whether she wins or loses. It will be a disgrace [only] if she withdraws.”
“This is part of the Iranian strategy to become regional hegemons. Hence, the first thing that needs to be done—mostly, by the United States and the international community—is to stop Iranian activation of these militias,” said Col. (res.) Shaul Shay.
“The fragile government does not have a mandate from the public to deal with the peace process,” said Ido Zelkovitz, head of the Middle East Studies program at the Max Stern Yezreel Valley College and a research fellow at the University of Haifa.
Meanwhile, the Iranian-backed Houthis have significantly escalated missile and drone attack on Saudi targets, as Houthi leadership also threatens to target the Jewish state.
