Two Israeli men have been arrested after driving into Syrian territory on Saturday, according to police.

One of the men is from the Druze town of Buq’ata in the Golan Heights and the other from Tamra in the Lower Galilee. Northern District police officers detained them for questioning at the Golan station after they were apprehended by the military.

“Access to areas near the border fence is prohibited and dangerous, and crossing the border into Lebanon or Syria is strictly illegal,” the police statement added. “The penalty for this offense is up to four years in prison.”

In November, the Israel Defense Forces detained a Syrian who crossed into the Israeli Golan Heights.

According to the military, the suspect “did not stop in response to calls by soldiers, was shot in the leg and transferred to Ziv Medical Center in Safed for further treatment and questioning.”
