Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan met with the United Arab Emirates Ambassador to the United Nations Lana Nusseibeh on Wednesday for the first time.

The meeting was held at the UAE Mission to the United Nations.

Erdan and Nusseibeh stressed the importance of increasing cooperation between their countries to expand the benefits in the Middle East, in addition to areas of economic, social and cultural concern.

They also agreed to advocate at the United Nations for issues such as the response to the global coronavirus pandemic, digital cooperation and countering extremism online, empowering women, climate action and environmental protection, according to the Israeli and Emirati U.N. missions.

Israel and the UAE signed an agreement on Sept. 15 at the White House to normalize ties between the two Middle Eastern countries. Bahrain signed a similar agreement with Israel as part of what is being called the Abraham Accords.
