Philip Sellinger, the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, announced his resignation on Monday, to be effective on Jan. 8.
“Serving as the United States attorney has been the honor of a lifetime,” he stated. “I leave knowing the storied traditions of this office will continue through our dedicated career assistant U.S. attorneys and staff.”
During his time in office, Sellinger prosecuted multiple cases involving antisemitic hate crimes.
On July 23 of this year, he announced the sentencing of 29-year-old Dion Marsh to 40 years in prison. Marsh pleaded guilty to violent assaults against Orthodox Jews in and around Lakewood, N.J.
On Nov. 14, 2023, Sellinger announced the sentencing of 19-year-old Omar Alkattoul, to 15 months for circulating a “manifesto” vowing to attack a synagogue.
“No one should be targeted for violence or with acts of hate because of how they worship,” he said following Alkattoul’s sentencing. “Protecting our communities of faith and places of worship is at the heart of this office’s mission.”
Sellinger, through national security prosecutions, also secured convictions against two individuals who concealed material support for Hamas and Syrian foreign terrorist organizations.
