Explosions rock UAE ahead of visit by US, Israeli officials
Police in Abu Dhabi share pictures of an explosion having destroyed restaurants and other nearby shops on Sheikh Rashi Bin Saeed Road, known as Airport Road.
“Israel and the UAE are putting the region on a truly transformative path,” says U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brian • Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi: Peace effort’s goal is “to help a white supremacist Islamophobe win elections.”
In a major step towards normalizing relations between the two countries, El Al Flight 971 touches down in Abu Dhabi after a three-hour flight from Tel Aviv.
The application is expected to be approved, as Riyadh in the past has allowed the use of its airspace for unofficial flights between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
“This is an important step in promoting prosperity and peace in the region,” the Israeli premier says, ahead of the first official flight from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi carrying a joint Israeli-U.S. delegation.
Flight there on Boeing 737-900 numbered LY971 • Return flight to Ben-Gurion Airport numbered LY972 for respective calling codes.
“This is not the West coming to enlighten the natives, so to speak. This is two different cultures, and they need to learn from each other,” says University of Haifa president Ron Robin.
The delegations will fly from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi in an Israeli jet in what will be the first direct commercial flight between the two nations.
In addition to traveling to Israel and the UAE, the U.S. delegation will visit Bahrain, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
