As the Olympics, the world’s largest sporting event, prepares to kick off in Paris on July 26, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund has unveiled for the first time a collection of historical photographs captured before the establishment of the State of Israel and during its formative years.

These images showcase the pivotal role of sports as a cultural cornerstone in the country, spanning from school gymnastics classes to a diverse array of competitive events.

Since the founding of the Zionist movement and the beginning of modern settlement in the Land of Israel, sports have been an integral part of the Jewish community and the burgeoning state.

Jewish sports associations were founded, physical education programs were integrated into schools, and much more. These activities played a pivotal role in promoting national unity and developing the concept of “muscular Judaism.”

“These photos reflect the Zionist sports vision that that predates and follows the establishment of our state. It’s inspiring to recall the pioneering spirit and commitment to sports captured in these images, which have contributed significantly to our nation’s development,” said Efrat Sinai, director of archives at KKL-JNF.
