IDF kills Hezbollah arms smuggler on Lebanon-Syria border

Mohammed Mahdi Ali Shaheen’s actions violated the ceasefire between Jerusalem and Beirut, the military said.

An IDF drone strike in northern Lebanon on Thursday killed a Hezbollah operative involved in procuring weapons for the terrorist group, the military said, in the second such attack this week.

Mohammed Mahdi Ali Shaheen was “coordinating terrorist transactions for the purchase of weapons on the Syria-Lebanon border since the understandings between Israel and Lebanon came into effect,” the IDF said.

The terrorist, who played a prominent role in Hezbollah’s regional division in the Beqaa Valley, was involved in smuggling weapons from Syria to Lebanon, according to the Israeli military’s statement.

“Shaheen’s actions posed a threat to the State of Israel and constituted a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” the IDF said.

The attack came one day after another IDF drone strike in northeastern Lebanon killed a prominent member of the Hezbollah unit that is responsible for smuggling weapons into Lebanon.

A shaky ceasefire with Hezbollah that began on Nov. 27 after a year of war remains in place, with the Israeli military retaining positions at five border points because the terrorist organization has not left the area south of the Litani River and the Lebanese Armed Forces has not fully deployed there, as required by the terms of the truce.
