Israeli soldiers opened fire at a vehicle that accelerated toward them after crossing the Beitar checkpoint south of Jerusalem on Wednesday, prompting a manhunt by IDF and police forces after the driver fled, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Troops identified a vehicle carrying Palestinians without entry permits that crossed into Green Line Israel at the checkpoint and then sped toward the soldiers, who responded by shooting at the car; no injuries were reported.

The army said the occupants escaped and transferred the investigation to police.

Police said an officer had stopped the Palestinian vehicle for a traffic violation and opened fire after the driver fled when the officer exited his patrol car to carry out an inspection.
