Funeral held for final and oldest victim of Pittsburgh synagogue shooting

The final funeral service commenced for the oldest and last of the 11 Jewish worshippers shot and killed in Saturday’s mass shooting at the Tree of Life*Or L’Simcha Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Rose Mallinger, 97, was laid to rest early Friday afternoon.

On Thursday, husband and wife Sylvan and Bernice Simon, 86 and 84 years old, respectively, were buried, along with Richard Gottfried, 65.

Earlier in the week, services were held for Jerry Rabinowitz, a 66-year-old family physician; retiree Daniel Stein, 71, whose name was the first to be publicized; brothers David Rosenthal, 54, and Cecil Rosenthal, 59; Joyce Fienberg, 75; Melvin Wax, 87; and Irving Younger, 69.

The shooting suspect, Robert Bowers, was charged on Wednesday in a 44-count indictment. On Thursday, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
