The theme of the Badajos display was reportedly selected to mark the 75th year of the liberation of Nazi death and concentration camps.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial said that the show presents a “dangerous” fictional version of the Holocaust, specifically criticizing a scene in the opening credits where a chess game features humans as pieces killed after each is taken by the opponent.
The Berlinale features other movies with Jewish themes, including “Minyan,” “Speer Goes to Hollywood” and “Listening In.”
The Coalition for Jewish Concerns is asking that the Birkenau church, which is topped by a large cross, be moved back into the nearby village from the building it occupies, which served as the SS commandant’s headquarters.
Among the website’s 20 different definitions of the Nazi concentration camp are “a summer camp for Jews, “a disneyland for its time” and “the happy resort for Jews during WW2.”
“My father was very clear: Every time someone asked what he aspired to be, he said, ‘A good Jew,’ ” said Elisha Wiesel.

If enacted, it would expand the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s education programming to teachers nationwide, requiring the museum to develop and disseminate resources to improve awareness and understanding of the Holocaust and its lessons.

The proclamation notes that Holocaust survivors have told their story, and that the world should learn from the European genocide that killed 11 million people—6 million of them Jews.
