Jake Sullivan will be the first high-ranking Biden administration official to visit the Jewish state since the inauguration of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Netanyahu was prime minister in Sept. 2020 when Israel normalized relations with Abu Dhabi as part of the Abraham Accords.
“‘The Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.’ I have summarized the two continuing actions that I have taken upon myself,” says the Israeli prime minister.
Benedict, the first pope to retire in 600 years, reached out to Jews during his papacy. His first official act was to send a letter to Rome’s Jewish community.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pressing Israel to supply Kyiv with weapons, Jerusalem has shied away from arming the country over fears of upsetting Russia.
“The Jewish people is not occupying its land and is not occupying its eternal capital Jerusalem. No U.N. resolution can distort this historical truth,” says the Israeli prime minister.
“I look forward to working with the new Israeli government to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the region,” said the U.S. secretary of state.
Gilad Erdan is set to serve through the end of 2024 under the new Israeli government.
The prism spanned from congratulatory to critical, though all pledged continued support.
“We will take Israel to new heights,” said the prime minister.
“I look forward to working with Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has been my friend for decades,” says the U.S. president.
