Long Island town passes resolution to adopt IHRA definition of anti-Semitism
“The town is committed to the fight against intolerance and hate, and we stand together with the community to send this powerful message,” said North Hempstead supervisor Judi Bosworth.
“The fact that this is happening around Purim is especially meaningful, as Purim tells the story of standing up to the genocide that Haman had planned for the Jews,” said Rabbi Shlomo Litvin.
They say the IHRA definition remains “an important safeguard” against the continued rise of harassment and intimidation of Jewish students.
“Anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. Not denouncing BDS is anti-Semitism,” said Student Association member Noah Wagner.
The initiatives began several years ago after a rise in hate-filled taunts and anti-Semitic shouts at European football matches.
A number of colleges have already adopted the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, including Arizona State University, the University of Georgia and Florida State University.
The results showed 32 percent supporting the proposal and 45 percent against it, along with 23 percent abstaining.
“They did not rest until they made sure that their community was represented, supported and protected,” said Talia Lerner, StandWithUs Senior Southern Campus Coordinator.

Paris adopts IHRA definition of anti-Semitism
The decision was taken by the Council of Paris, headed by Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Germany’s foreign minister wanted to make sure that the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance remained on equal footing with other organizations.
