A mentally unstable individual was shot and wounded as he attempted to stab Israel Defense Forces soldiers at a gas station outside Kedumim in Samaria on Monday morning, local authorities said.

“At 6:55 a.m., an attempted stabbing of soldiers was carried out at the gas station at the entrance to the community. The attacker is a Jewish individual who appears to be mentally unstable,” according to an official message sent to residents by Kedumim mayor Oziel Vatik.

“The assailant was shot, wounded and evacuated to the hospital for treatment. There are no additional casualties,” said Vatik.

The military confirmed in a statement that “an IDF soldier and an Israeli civilian opened fire due to suspicion of an attempted stabbing targeting IDF troops at the Kedumim gas station. From an initial investigation, it emerges that this involves an Israeli civilian who approached IDF troops while in possession of a knife. The civilian was wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.”

The circumstances of the incident were still being probed, the IDF said.

According to the Hatzalah Judea and Samaria (Rescuers Without Borders) medical response group, the assailant, a man in his early twenties, sustained serious injuries.
