Police make arrests in connection to three attacks on Jewish men in Brooklyn
“No one deserves to be the victim of such senseless, hateful violence,” said New York City Police Department Commissioner Keechant Sewell.
In one incident, two African-American teens chase a Jewish man down the street; in another, an African-American male sprays a fire extinguisher on a Jewish man.
“We don’t have an official season yet. We need more people—50 or 60 is the goal,” says Isaac Giro.
Bail was set at $30,000 for Logan Jones, 18, who was accused of assaulting a couple on their way to synagogue.
Rabbi Yehoshua Lefkowitz was in the Crown Heights neighborhood when he was approached by an unknown suspect who punched him in the head and kicked him in the legs.
“We need a more visible police presence in at-risk neighborhoods, and need to build stronger educational frameworks and closer relationships with those in the broader community,” said Gideon Taylor, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council-New York.
It comes just one day after New York Mayor Eric Adams convened a meeting on Feb. 17 of Jewish community leaders to express his concern about the rise of anti-Semitic incidents in the city.
New York Mayor Eric Adams tweeted: “Hatred won’t be tolerated in our city. Anti-Semitic acts of violence are an attack on every New Yorker and they will be met with the force of the entire city.”
Police said that on Sunday night, two individuals pushed the 26-year-old Jewish man to the ground and beat him with sticks before fleeing the scene by car.
The suspect has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
