It may mean asking someone what “settler colonialism” is or whether they can define a “Jewish lobby,” explains Jonah Cohen of CAMERA. “It can also mean prodding someone about why they believe a certain position they hold is true.”
“The best thing is expose the facts—to show that that they’re making things up,” says Anne Herzberg, legal adviser for NGO Monitor. “Transparency is another big issue. I don’t think anyone has revealed yet who wrote the report.”
Aviva Rosenschein, CAMERA’s International Campus Director, told JNS: “It’s gotten much worse since I started in 2008 with CAMERA—much worse. It’s much more intimidating on the campuses.”
“It’s no coincidence that anti-Israel forces focus on schools with more Jewish students to try to poison their minds about Israel,” says Hillel International president and CEO Adam Lehman. “Like the child at the seder who doesn’t even know how to ask, many of our kids are vulnerable.”
While they are looking forward to some sense of pre-pandemic normalcy at their schools, they also risk facing BDS and pro-Palestinian activists with renewed energy against the Jewish state.
Among the topics discussed at the annual CAMERA on Campus conference were workshops on writing news articles for university and local media, hosting events on campus and how to boost a pro-advocacy presence on social media.
“Jews come in many shapes and colors, whether they look European, Middle Eastern, black, etc. This campaign can help people understand this concept of the diversity of Jews,” says Eden Abraham Bouskila, 19, a CAMERA Fellow at UC Davis in California.
In their eagerness to stand in full solidarity with BLM, some Jewish organizations and publications have urged Jews to put aside their concerns about its anti-Israel pronouncements and support for BDS.
Even though her semester will be online this fall because of the coronavirus pandemic, pro-Israel student and CAMERA Fellow Sophie Sklar of McGill University says she will “be writing as much as ever and fighting as much as ever for this cause I care so deeply about.”
HIAS wants ZOA and CAMERA disciplined for criticizing them. ZOA fires back saying HIAS has no place in a Conference that is reserved for groups with a Jewish mission.
