Campus Antisemitism
“School districts, like colleges and universities, must take prompt and effective action to address antisemitic harassment,” stated Harmeet Dhillon, assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights.
“The suspension of SJP is a vital step that recognizes a long-standing pattern rather than a single isolated incident,” a Duke student told JNS.
“This lawsuit seeks to hold UCLA accountable and to ensure that no faculty member is ever again subjected to such blatant discrimination,” the law firm representing the employees stated.
“These changes reinforce that transparency and accountability can be powerful motivators,” Shira Goodman, of the Anti-Defamation League, told JNS.
“There have been continuing conversations with Harvard about compliance concerns,” said Kenneth Marcus, of the Brandeis Center.
The program aims to address “antisemitism as both a rhetorical challenge and an ever-shifting but persistent social reality,” Kelly Carr, an associate professor at the university, stated.
Students for a Democratic Society stated that the event seeks to “expose UW’s refusal to divest from war and genocide during tourism season.”
“It’s pretty terrifying to see a speaker walk onto campus giving a Nazi salute, and seeing the hatred that he carries,” Juli Goodman, executive director of Hillel at Ohio University, said.
Darryll Pines, president of the public university, stated that the image was “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
“It’s a great victory for the First Amendment right to free speech, including the right to draw attention to bigotry and hateful speech,” Paul Eckles, of the Brandeis Center, told JNS. “We commend our client for having the courage to speak out.”
A spokesman for the Ivy told JNS that the school believes being required “to create lists of Jewish faculty and staff, and to provide personal contact information, raises serious privacy and First Amendment concerns.”
After an investigation, the university said that a mob blocking Jewish students, accusing them of being “baby killers,” didn’t violate the student code of conduct.
