Iranian President Hassan Rouhani accused the United States on Sunday of being at fault for his country’s economic crisis, as the rial fell to its lowest-ever level against the dollar.

“It’s been the most difficult year, due to the enemy’s economic pressure and the [COVID-19] pandemic,” Rouhani said during a TV interview, Reuters reported. “The economic pressure that began in 2018 has increased ... and today it is the toughest pressure on our dear country.”

He was referring to the Trump administration’s withdrawal two years ago from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, Washington’s reimposition of sanctions and to the fact that Iran has been particularly hard hit by the coronavirus.
