“We are troubled that AB-1460 could lead to further exclusion of, and discrimination against, Jewish students on campus, exacerbating a pattern of isolation and ostracization of Jews that has become far too commonplace,” said AJC director of campus affairs Zev Hurwitz.
The Litvins are planning to provide two courses: One is a primer on Judaism, and the other will be a detailed class on what constitutes anti-Semitism and how to identify it.
“We are deeply concerned that without adequate safeguards, these courses could become vehicles for one-sided political advocacy and activism that will both subvert the academic mission of the university, and incite bigotry and harm against some CSU students,” they wrote.
“The materials fail to adequately discuss anti-Semitism—and characterize American Jews only in the context of how some have secured white privilege, which is misleading and erases the experience of a significant part of our community, including Middle Eastern and North African Jews, as well of other Jews of Color,” said Sarah Levin, executive director of JIMENA.
