In memory of Yosef Neumann, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would rename the Domestic Terrorism Act the “Josef Neumann Hate Crimes Domestic Terrorism Act.”
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office was originally “very resistant” to prosecute the charges as a hate crime, but following public outrage, classified her actions as such.
“Jury selection will take some time because potential jurors will have to be screened for their views,” reported “The San Diego Union-Tribune.”
There is a “virus” of hate right now in America, stated New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, acknowledging that “I thought New York would be immune from it.”
“If a skinhead shoplifts a beer, it’s not a hate crime,” said U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Elan Carr. “Why would you let that kid go?”
Tara Rios, 47, was released on her own recognizance and scheduled to return to court on Feb. 3.
Of the reported 81 total hate crimes that targeted religious groups in 2019, 69 of them were anti-Jewish, compared to 43 of the 52 total hate crimes in that category the previous year as anti-Semitic.
Officers said he used orange paint to draw a swastika on the front steps of the temple and “F U Black Shirt” on the doors of the synagogue.
A supplemental $1 million allocation will also be given for the state’s Nonprofit Security Grant Pilot Program, which provides funds for nonprofits most at risk for potential terror attacks.
The museum visits are the second step in the new anti-hate crimes curriculum for New York City public schools introduced by city officials.
The paper advises that “an armed guard or armed congregant is not a security strategy or plan on its own. Armed security can be part of a plan, but it is only that—a component. A true security plan includes many other layers and components … .”
