Joining in the announcement were various faith leaders, including those from the Orthodox Union, one of the groups calling for the increase.
“Particularly in light of recent anti-Semitic incidents, it is essential to continue this important work with our partners to protect all of our citizens from acts of violence and hate,” said Jason Shames, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey.
Measures include the installation of security cameras, secure doors, barriers and active-shooter training drills, which Congregation Beth Israel’s Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker said helped him in acting against the hostage-taker in Texas.
“As someone who has been repeatedly attacked by Zahra Billoo for almost 15 years, I am amused that the Anti-Defamation League, Jewish Federations, Hillels and ‘Zionist synagogues’ only become upset with her when she called them out as ‘polite Zionists,’ ” said Daniel Pipes, president of the Middle East Forum. “Glad you woke up, guys, and welcome to the club.”
“He really was a man of principle; he was a man who stood up for what was right; and above all, he put country above partisanship,” said Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition.
A member of the anti-Semitic Goyim Defense League stood atop a highway overpass not too far from the Dell JCC, gave the Nazi salute and unfurled a banner that read “Vax the Jews.”
