The two leaders discussed recent developments and actions Israel has taken, in addition to plans to take amid fighting with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“I want to thank President [Joe] Biden for his unequivocal support. You cannot equate a democracy that values life with a terror organization that glorifies death,” says the Israeli prime minister in a televised address.
“My expectation and hope is that this will be closing down sooner than later, but Israel has a right to defend itself when you have thousands of rockets flying into your territory,” said the president.
To date, more than 1,300 rockets have been fired on the Jewish state since the hostilities began.
“We stand united against a reprehensible enemy,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
It remains unclear how Lapid could bring together the disparate group of parties spanning the entire Israeli political spectrum from the left, right, religious, secular and even Arab parties, who have never backed an Israeli government.
Reports indicate that as the head of the second-largest party in the Knesset, he is the likely choice. Naftali Bennett is also a possibility.
