Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced on Friday afternoon that she is closely monitoring the conflict between Iran and Israel.

Gillibrand told JNS in a statement that Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

“The situation in the Middle East is extremely serious,” she stated. “I will always support Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Gillibrand said that Iran is the foremost “sponsor of terrorism in the world.”

“With Iranian retaliation already occurring and likely to continue, I am praying for the Israeli people, as well as for American troops, personnel and citizens throughout the Middle East,” she said. “I will remain in close contact with our intelligence and national security community as this situation evolves.”
