Israel could elect its first female Druze member during next month’s election.

TV anchor Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh, who is running on the Blue and White Party headed by former Israel Defense Forces’ Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and Yesh Atid Party leader Yair Lapid, also a former journalist, is all but assured a seat in the next Knesset when Israelis go to the polls on April 9.

“I was the first non-Jewish woman to anchor a Hebrew-language news broadcast,” Kamal-Mreeh, 34, told Reuters.

“I remember one day a religious [community] member approached my parents and said it is not appropriate to work in this field as a Druze woman,” she said.
