“Anti-BDS legislation is about commercial activities, not about people’s ability to speak,” says the 33-year-old. “People are free to criticize Israel; that is a protected right. But organized boycotting and divestment with the support of state, local or federal government is not acceptable.”
“The resolution fails to mention [Minnesota Rep. Ilhan] Omar by name,” said American Jewish Congress president Jack Rosen. “Now that her anti-Semitic statements have become a pattern, Congress should have the courage to call her out clearly.”
The final tally of the legislation, which defines anti-Semitism as “the centuries-old bigotry and form of racism faced by Jewish people simply because they are Jews,” was 407-23.
“It’s shameful that Canadian university students are using Western platforms to discriminate against the Jewish people and the only democratic state in the Middle East: Israel,” said Avi Benlolo, president and CEO of the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Pro-Israel and Jewish groups have been pushing the Democratic Party to take a stand against anti-Semitism and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s remarks, which could undermine the party’s position for criticizing Republicans and U.S. President Donald Trump for their views on racism.
Despite having been a governor of a state with a relatively small Jewish community, he has a wide-ranging relationship with the Jewish state, including two trips to Israel as the leader of the Centennial State between 2011 and 2019.
The American historian’s eighth book moves away from history and contends with present-day forms of the longest form of human hatred, one that’s rearing its head across continents.
“I will not stay low-key when I see anti-Semitism. I will always be respectful, but I will not be quiet. If anyone sees it another way, I challenge you to question your ethics and truly ask yourself where you stand,” said WFU Hillel Israel chair Phillip Yurchenko.
“We hope those making these charges will work expeditiously, and we hope that the prime minister will be proven to be innocent, and we get back to the world of diplomacy and the security of the state,” said former Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold.
