The U.S.-drafted statement would have the council express “serious concern” about Abbas’s remarks, which “included vile anti-Semitic slurs and baseless conspiracy theories, and do not serve the interests of the Palestinian people or peace in the Middle East,” AFP reported.
In his apology, Abbas both condemned anti-Semitism and called the Holocaust “most heinous crime in history.”
Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas said he might “take tough steps in the near future in our relationship with our neighbors [Israel] and the Americans,” though he did not elaborate.
“We bow our heads to their heroism, their bravery, their determination and courage,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said at the ceremony at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw.
The announcement was made the day before Holocaust Remembrance Day, and just days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu railed against the organization for thwarting Israeli policy and trying to erase Israel’s Jewish character.
Prior to the murder of 6 million Jews between 1939 and 1945, some 16,600,000 were spread throughout the world. Today’s data indicates that there are currently 14,511,000 Jews on Earth, a number similar to that in 1922.
“As we witness an increase in anti-Semitism around the world and dangerous attempts to rewrite history, now more than ever we must ensure that the memories of the survivors pass on to the next generation,” said Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon.
Proposed legislation, if passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, would grant money raised through donations to American schools as part of the Holocaust Education Assistance Program.
While not totally comprehensive, the bill signed by President Trump meets a number of immediate needs.
A Pew Research Center survey of 18 countries finds that Jews are not wanted as neighbors or family members. Other minorities fared worse.
