Michael Spence, president of University College London, acknowledged free speech but seemed to draw a limit when it comes to some subjects.
“Acts of hate like this are disgraceful and cowardly; that swastikas vandalized a home of Jewish students is especially reprehensible,” university leaders wrote in a joint statement.
It supports a resolution passed in 2014 promoting the BDS movement.
Adam Elayan decided to make his story public so that someone “who may harbor the kind of prejudice I used to will see that hatred towards others is a choice we make, and like me, decide to make better choices.”
The coronavirus has forced Hillel to rethink its programming and services to adapt to the new reality of remote learning and provide for the well-being, both physically and mentally, of the students it serves. It hopes to carry these lessons forward when life returns to normal.
More than 400 academics sign a letter calling out a professor for “morally reprehensible” comments that “risk the personal security and well-being of Jewish students and, more widely, Jews in the U.K.”
Thomas Brennan, who taught at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, says he “loves and respects Jews” and was “speaking out of despair caused by a personal crisis.”
While he welcomed the decision by Students for Justice in Palestine to end its months-long harassment campaign, Max Price says it does not “absolve” the anti-Israel group of its behavior.
“There is this conflating of speech with violence. You know, the idea that somebody telling a joke or saying something that hurts someone’s feelings is tantamount to a threat to their safety,” said Samantha Harris.
They say the IHRA definition remains “an important safeguard” against the continued rise of harassment and intimidation of Jewish students.
With a cameraman heard laughing in the background, the student said “96 percent of Germans said that it made their lives much more positive … the other 4 percent said it only moderately improved their lives ... it protected the German minorities; you know, they were being oppressed by the Jews out in Poland … it redistributed wealth ... .”
“Anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. Not denouncing BDS is anti-Semitism,” said Student Association member Noah Wagner.
