Historian Yehuda Bauer, 92, says the joint Israeli-Polish statement on Poland’s controversial Holocaust law attacks the memory of the Holocaust and silences attempts to tell the stories of what befell Polish Jews at the hands of their countrymen.
The United Kingdom’s Prince William laid a wreath at the Yad Vashem Hall of Remembrance on Tuesday, while signing the guestbook and noting his great-grandmother’s role in sheltering a Jewish family during the Holocaust, in his first day of his official tour of the State of Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces flew a platoon of 40 soldiers and officers to Europe, where together with American troops they parachuted down to the ground from aircraft, and practiced seizing airfields and other targets.
“We have to learn lessons from the past, but one of the fundamental lessons is that not everything is an Auschwitz,” said Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
The first seminar, which concluded on June 7 in Jackson, Miss., compared the exclusionary policies of Nazi Germany with the Jim Crow laws operating during the same time period in the United States.
Alison Chabloz, a 54-year-old amateur musician, was sentenced by a British judge to 20 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, for threatening messages and anti-Semitic songs that she posted to her YouTube channel.
The ESJF was founded in 2015 to protect Jewish burial sites in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in places where Jewish communities were wiped out during the Holocaust. So far, it has placed fences around 102 Jewish cemeteries in six European countries and conducted mass field surveys of sites.
The excellent bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Israel could be deepened and developed in a number of sectors, including technology.
“We’ve realized that Austria was not only a victim, but a perpetrator,” said Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in Israel. • “To remember means also to admit the truth.”
In early 2005, Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” was the fourth best-selling book in the country, selling 50,000 copies. It is now available not only in bookstores but at venues such as Migros, the country’s fourth-largest supermarket chain, with more than 1,800 locations.
The two institutions will share materials on the Jews of North Africa during World War II and cooperate on future educational projects.
The legislation capped intensive efforts by Jewish groups, including the World Jewish Restitution Organization, to take immediate action while Holocaust survivors are still alive.
