Israel’s Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved on Sunday government backing for an amendment to the Counter-Terrorism Law of 2016 that would authorize the defense minister to designate individual persons as terrorist operatives.

Currently, the law only permits the designation of organizations.

The purpose of the amendment is to thwart the financing of individuals operating in various organizations, and in particular in the Hamas terrorist group.

The amendment also addresses the issues of recruitment, financing and transfer of funds for terrorist purposes.

The United States and Middle Eastern Gulf nations are also trying to disrupt Hamas‘s finances by blocking an investment portfolio estimated to be worth between $400 million and $1 billion.

It includes companies operating “under the guise of legitimate businesses,” CNN reported.
