One of France’s top political leaders lamented the levels of antisemitism in the country as she reported a new incident directed at her colleagues.

On Sunday, Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the French National Assembly, said in an interview on France 3, “I myself again lodged a complaint under Article 40 on behalf of dozens and dozens of MPs who received a clearly antisemitic email.”

Braun-Pivet, whose paternal grandparents were Jewish, referenced an attack on a man leaving a Paris synagogue on March 1. She said that “the climate remains of anxiety for the Jewish community.”

She called the fight against antisemitism “a battle of yesterday, today and tomorrow.”

On Oct. 30, some 20 synagogues in Paris had to evacuate after receiving a bomb threat.

Approximately 440,000 Jews live in France. A poll conducted by the Anti-Defamation League in 2023 found that 15% of the French population embraced antisemitism, believing six or more anti-Jewish tropes. That same year, the number of antisemitic acts in France nearly quadrupled.
