Hamas official on Gaza protests: ‘Peaceful resistance’ with ‘popular support’

Mahmoud Al-Zahhar said the mass riots at the Israel-Gaza border were “growing and developing.”

Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahhar said Hamas was employing “peaceful resistance bolstered by a military force and by security agencies, and enjoying tremendous popular support.”

Speaking on Al-Jazeera on May 13, Al-Zahhar, the former foreign minister in the Hamas government, said the option of armed struggle has not diminished. “On the contrary, it is growing and developing,” he said.

“Leadership should be responding with moral clarity, not suggesting that the act of teaching about the Holocaust has somehow ‘missed the mark,’” said Kurt Schwartz, CEO of CAMERA.
