The Democratic Socialists of America, in coalition with the Palestinian Youth Movement and the Party for Socialism and Liberation, has called for a “National Day of Action” on Jan. 10, to protest what they describe as the Trump administration’s “illegal war against Venezuela.”
“Hands off Venezuela, hands off Palestine,” the Palestinian Youth Movement stated. “We extend our solidarity to all righteous peoples struggling against US imperialism and Zionism.”
The coalition claimed the Trump administration “kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and started a blatantly criminal war against Venezuela,” and called U.S. actions “nakedly imperialist acts” aimed at installing a “U.S. puppet government” and seizing Venezuela’s oil resources.
The DSA also argued that the administration’s actions represent a new “Trump corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine, designed to enforce U.S. dominance over Latin America, and accused the president of seeking to impose “U.S. hegemony” through military force and sanctions.
Their demands include freeing Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, ending all sanctions against Venezuela, impeaching U.S. President Donald Trump and passing a war powers resolution—an effort that would block the president’s use of U.S. armed forces to engage in hostilities within or against Venezuela unless authorized by Congress.
“DSA leadership is increasingly comfortable laundering hardline anti-U.S. revolutionary politics through a mainstream-facing brand, alongside militant networks like the Palestinian Youth Movement,” wrote Stu Smith, an investigative analyst at the Manhattan Institute, who noted that the group organizing with the Party for Socialism and Liberation signals “boundary collapse on the left.”
“This needs to be confronted now before it hardens into the new normal,” Smith stated, adding that “if this becomes the face of the left in America, there will be no Democrats left and certainly no progressives.”
