“The ongoing decades-old long demonization and dehumanization of the Jewish state has been misunderstood as political criticism when in truth, it has been the new virulent form of anti-Semitism,” said Dan Diker, a fellow and senior project director at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.
“Williams College is an institution of higher education that received federal funds, and is subject to Title VI,” wrote George Mason University law professor David Bernstein in a complaint.
“At the end of the day, it is imperative for pro-Israel students to combat this extreme left, which disguises itself in rhetoric such as ‘human rights’ and ‘progressive.’ We believe that if we stand beside them, we can combat this threat and expose it together,” said Amit Deri, CEO of Reservists on Duty.
“We value our many relationships with a variety of universities and research centers in Israel,” stated Northwestern president Morton Schapiro and university provost Jonathan Holloway.
Terms such as “apartheid,” “genocide,” “ethnic cleansing” and “colonialism” have been used to delegitimize Zionism and the Jewish state.
“We are sorry that the audience had to experience these inappropriate remarks,” said New York University president Andrew Hamilton. “A graduation should be a shared, inclusive event; the speaker’s words—one-sided and tendentious—indefensibly made some in the audience feel unwelcome and excluded.”
Ellen Schanzer, whose great-grandfather, Martin Bernstein, founded NYU’s music department in 1925 and was a decades-long professor there, said she “will certainly not attend an institution where my core beliefs and very existence is being threatened.”
“This was hate speech, there is no other way of classifying it,” said student Viktorya Saroyan, who identified herself as not part of the Jewish community. “Watching an educator belittle a student to tears with such blatant ignorance leaves me to question the values UCLA wishes to uphold.”
It follows the rejection of a university professor, John Cheney-Lippold, to write a recommendation for a Jewish student to study in Israel, labeling it an “apartheid” nation and making the matter political.
“The administration must unequivocally condemn the original decision and ensure that a similar incident never happens again,” said Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs.
“Please know that we emphatically renounce such hateful symbols and do not support or condone any viewpoint that is hurtful, harmful or disparaging,” said university chancellor Mark Mone.
