The U.S. House speaker is heading a 20-member delegation of American lawmakers.
“We feel that here’s a woman in Golda Meir, who stood for so many things,” said initiative funder Bobby Rechnitz. “She was very progressive and very liberal, and yet she helped found the country and fulfill the Zionist dream.”
“These are Israel’s reserve stockpiles for times of war,” a former cabinet minister says. “The move has had a bigger meaning in light of the threats on Israel in multiple theaters.”
With support from the city’s Jewish Federation, the measure also celebrates Israel’s 75th anniversary.
“Rather than punishing Israel for doing the right thing, we should be learning from them,” said Michael Rubin of American Enterprise Institute.
The General Assembly, featured only one session on judicial reform, with exclusively anti-reform panelists. Queried by JNS, JFNA president and CEO Eric Fingerhut explained that the panel—titled, “75 Years of Israeli Democracy: Understanding What’s Motivating the Largest Protest Movement in Israel’s History”—was about the protesters, not the reforms themselves.
“The demographics are changing,” said Irving Lebovics, co-chairman of the Agudah-affiliated Am Echad. “I’m not even sure who the federation represents today.”
Kol Ha’am—Voice of the People aims to foster dialogue between Jewish communities and cultivate the next generation of leaders.
“Israel is our most important, most reliable and only democratic ally in the region,” said North Carolina Democrat Rep. Kathy Manning.
The Republican will be the second-ever American speaker to address the Knesset plenum.
