Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, while he recovers from prostate surgery, issued a statement on Monday honoring former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died the day before at the age of 100.

“The government of Israel extends its condolences to the Carter family and the American people following the passing of President Jimmy Carter,” the statement said.

“We will always remember President Carter’s crucial role in facilitating the first Arab-Israeli peace treaty, signed by Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt. This treaty has lasted for nearly half a century, providing hope for future generations.”
