South African mission embarks on historic visit to Israel

A group of leaders will tour the Jewish state as a symbol of hope following recent tensions between the two countries.

In an unprecedented move, a group of South African leaders, including politicians, religious figures and influential community leaders, will embark on a journey to Israel. Scheduled to be held from March 22-27, this initiative—led by DiploAct and facilitated by the South African Friends of Israel (SAFI)—signifies a bold step towards fostering peace and understanding between South Africa and Israel against a backdrop of recent tensions.

The visit, a direct response to the heightened discord following the International Court of Justice trial in The Hague, represents a proactive approach to diplomacy and mutual respect. It symbolizes hope and a commitment to uncovering the truth through firsthand experiences and engagements.

The delegation is committed to an immersive experience in Israel, delving deep into the nation’s historical and cultural fabric. A key focus will be on engaging directly with communities and kibbutzim impacted by the Oct. 7 attacks. The leaders will meet with families of hostages, offering solidarity and gaining an understanding of the challenges faced by these communities adjacent to the border with the Gaza Strip.

The visit also includes strategic meetings with influential political and community leaders, in addition to tours of significant religious and historical sites.
