“I feel I must do something to honor and continue the Jewish life of my ancestors, and to speak up against the anti-Semitism that nearly extinguished us,” said activist Elisha Wiesel, the only child of Holocaust survivors Marion and the late Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.
The states that have already issued proclamations include Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming and Nevada with Virginia in the works.
“The Nazis thought they were the future, and that Jews would be something you only find in a museum. Instead, the Jewish state is the future, and Mauthausen is a museum,” said Foreign Minister Yair Lapid.
“The more you have alarming trends, the more you have people to face them,” said Professor Uriya Shavit. “While anti-Semitism is really bad and getting worse, I think it is really crucial to keep the picture balanced.”
