To know the 1506 massacre in Lisbon is to know the October 7, 2023 massacre in Israel and the historic genocides of Jews all over Europe. The only change has been in the weapons.
The trailer for the film “1506" will be presented on December 30, 2023 and the world premiere of the film will take place on April 19, 2024. The film will be available free on the Internet on many platforms and in many languages.
“This project is not commercial but educational, aimed principally at youth. ‘1506' will be the most universal of Portuguese films, just as ‘1618' was the one that won most international awards,” says Gabriel Senderowicz, President of the Jewish Community of Oporto and member of the board of the European Jewish Association.
The audiovisual producer chosen by the Community to produce “1506" was the Oporto company Lightbox.
The script with the historical reenactment, produced in 2021, relies on the technical support of the Alberto Benveniste Chair of Sephardic Studies of the University of Lisbon.
Story:
More than 3,000 Jews were brutally assassinated in Lisbon from April 19-21, 1506. All it took was a spark for ancient myths to cause a catastrophe. The bonfires with burning bodies were as high as the houses. Even babies were thrown onto the flames in a city filled with butchered bodies, where heads were borne aloft on the tips of lances.
The King and the Court were away, fleeing the effects of the bubonic plague, and no one was able to stop the anger of the people and the instigations of foreign sailors whose ships were anchored in the port. Good-hearted Catholics who attempted to help the Jews were also lynched.

– The Jewish Museum of Oporto (https://www.mjporto.com/pt) and the Holocaust Museum (https://www.mhporto.com/pt). The latter was visited by 100 thousand teenage school students in the last two years, corresponding to about 10% of the total teenage population of Portugal.
