Israel launched a missile strike on the Tiyas Military Airbase in the Homs Governorate on Wednesday night, reported Syrian state media.
Citing military sources, Syria’s SANA news agency said on Wednesday night that the missiles were launched by Israeli warplanes at about 10:30 p.m. from the direction of al-Tanf, which lies on the border with Iraq and Jordan. Syrian air defenses had downed “most” of the missiles, but the facility, also known as the T4 airbase, suffered damage in the attack, according to the report.
A spokesman for the Syrian military said that four Israeli missiles had hit the base, according to Reuters.
T4 is the largest airbase in Syria and has been accused by Israel of hosting the Iranian military. There have been several strikes on the base in recent years attributed to Israel.
This is the second airstrike in Syria this week attributed to Israel by official Syrian media.
At least two Syrian soldiers were killed and seven wounded in strikes on military sites in the southern Damascus and Daraa areas on Monday night, SANA reported on Tuesday. Monday’s strikes originated from the southern Golan Heights, according to the Syrian military.
U.K.-based war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that five members of an “Iran-backed militia” were killed in Monday’s strike, three of whom were non-Syrians, and that more than 10 others were wounded. The strikes caused “significant material losses,” according to the report.
