In 2010, the Knesset passed a law requiring compensation to be part of any future peace deal signed between Israel and an Arab country.
Part of it consists of $90 million for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which seeks to protect nonprofit institutions, including synagogues.
The lobby group seemed close to approving a plan aiming to reduce U.S. aid by the amount Israel invests in settlements, abandoning it only after being warned that such a move would end its influence in the Knesset.
Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime even though the suspect left no overt anti-Semitic signs.
“This is our message to universities,” said the president. “If you want to extend the tremendous amount of federal dollars that you get every year, you must reject anti-Semitism.”
The grant will offer mentorship, networking assistance, seed funding and logistical support to impact Israeli society through new initiatives and community-building.
“The World Zionist Congress is the ‘parliament of the people.’ This is the best way for American Jews to vote for their voice in Israel,” said Herbert Block of the American Zionist Movement.
The list is normally published in late December or early January, but was released early this year, perhaps due to the elections on Dec. 12.
